Bug Love

Who doesn't love pruning.  More a statement than a question.  It makes me feel like a sculptor.  A little here, a lot there.  Oh magnificent tree.  Pruning used to take a good portion of my time in my La Grande 'Yard of a thousand plants', but not so much here with my home being only 7 years old.  However, it finally occurred to me, after pulling into my driveway for the upteenth time and hearing the branches brush along the side of the van, that there was a tree just waiting for my touch.  So I pruned up, taking out select branches so none awkwardly crossed and such, and gently shaped.  Then I stood back to see the straight trunk and healthy dome revealed.  And the branches are all now above my van so we can enter the car with out ducking.

Ofcourse this left a pile of branches on the ground to be taken care of.  The perfect job for superkids!  My boys didn't seem overly excited when I explained their chore for the day:  to cut up all the branches in smaller pieces to get rid of and to strip as many leaves as possible off to add to the compost.  They started grumpy, but about an hour in, Sean came running inside to show me a leaf that they had found:

We love our bugs!  (except those flea beetles that are enjoying my broccoli right now)
He thought that was pretty cool.  A little later Thomas came running in to show me an insect he saw.  They took their time.  I think about 2 1/2 hours in all, but in the end they decided to just enjoy themselves.  Ahhh. So nice when it works out that way :)

  1. I didn't know you enjoyed pruning. I don't have the first clue about what to do with it.
